Thesis Exhibition

Artist Statement: In his recent paintings, Conor Dowdle uncovers and estranges the historical antecedents of our image-ruled world. Dowdle investigates visual culture through a study of historical painting typologies— depictions of social space, intimacy and friction, the heroic and its inverse. Dowdle makes observational drawings that act as source material which get recomposed and translated into large scale oil paintings. The aim of this process is to understand how art historical images affect contemporary lived experience, making the familiar feel strange and the strange feel enchanted.
